IMPLEMENTATION OF A RELATIONAL DATABASE MANAGEMENT TOOL TO DEFINE SYSTEM LEVEL REQUIREMENTS

I undertook my master’s thesis focusing on the implementation of a relational database to manage system requirements. This project aimed to improve the organization, traceability, and reduction of redundancy in complex requirement sets. Through this experience, I gained deep technical expertise in database design and development, alongside critical skills in managing detailed system data. The journey also enhanced my problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and capacity to deliver structured solutions for complex challenges—skills that have proven invaluable in my professional program and project management career.

The field of Systems Engineering strives to understand the interdependencies of multiple other fields of science and engineering. A critical system engineering deliverable is the definition of System Requirements. System Requirements are written in a clear and concise fashion to constrain the system’s inputs and outputs. This research will explore how using a relational database is an ideal method of managing system requirements.

Following the Systems Engineering approach to problem solving, the researcher will develop a robust system for defining, tracking, and managing well-defined system level requirements. The resulting tool, the System Requirement Management Tool (SRMT), is a web-based application that allows users to develop new systems by following the Systems Engineering approach to problem solving.
